John B. Halstead, 87, of Hamilton Montana passed away May 7th, 2016 at the Marcus Daly Hospice Center.

He was born on January 16, 1929 in South Charleston, West Virginia to Charles B and Edith Halstead.  John graduated from South Charleston High School and married Nancy Dillon, his high school sweetheart, also from South Charleston in July 1949.  He attended West Virginia University and Marshall College before joining his family in the hardware business.  Over 35 years he successfully managed the Modern ACE Hardware store.  After retiring from the hardware business he joined his wife in real estate where they worked together for 15 years.

Many of the good times in his life were spent at the family’s hunting camp in Monroe County WV.  He enjoyed spending time with his family hunting, fishing, playing tennis, playing bridge, and working in his home woodworking shop.   Foremost, he was an avid West Virginia University Mountaineer football fan – attending many home games in Morgantown.  In 2006 he and Nancy moved to Hamilton Montana to watch their grandson grow up.

Surviving is his wife of 66 years Nancy, his son John T Halstead and wife Jeri, and daughter-in-law Kari Halstead, his four-legged Labradoodle pal Rusty, all of Hamilton.  Also surviving is his grandson Daymon Halstead of Portland, Oregon, and John’s sister Juanita Neas of Charlotte, NC.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles B and Edith Halstead and son Michael.

A private service was held at the BeeHive Homes of Hamilton assisted living where John had thoroughly enjoyed the staff, residents, and activities for the last three months.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Marcus Daly Hospice Center in Hamilton MT.
