John Patrick Winn, 82, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2016. He was born December 18, 1933 in San Francisco, CA, the son of John Stirling Winn and Ellen Marie Bothwell.

John was raised in Daly City by loving aunts and uncles while his father served in WWII.  At the age of 17, John joined the Navy and was sent to Korea on an LST boat, and then to Bremerton, WA as a Navy dental technician. He graduated from San Francisco State in Biology and Environmental Health. John was employed by the State of California Department of Health for 32 years.  During this time he did reviews of all the County mental hospitals and penal facilities.  John helped draft the first medical waste and environmental health laws in California, and then supervised the implementation of these programs while serving on National Committees in the environment health and hazardous waste fields.

John and his wife Val enjoyed extensive travels to Europe, and they took many road trips in their RV with Jake, their German Shepherd. John was especially taken with China, and loved his many Asian travels.

John was a member of the Corvallis American Legion Post 91, and served as a member of the Honor Guard and this brought him great pleasure. He loved to fish and spent many afternoons with his friends tying flies, or going to Brown's Lake with his old dog, Howie. John's favorite words were "how can I help?".   Going to South Korea on a Military Revisit trip was at the top of John's "bucket list". This was miraculously accomplished September 29th - October 6th 2015. To make this dream a reality his cousin Gary Winn went with him, while Dr. Lawrence Brouwer helped John be well enough to travel.

John is survived by his wife, Valerie of Hamilton, daughter Shelley (aka "Pumpkin ") granddaughter Kaelyn and her other grandmother Susan; stepsons Scott (Facio), Eric, and grandson Josh (Kelli) all of Sacramento, California; and sister Myrle. John has a larger extended family with special love and smiles for Mary, Tonya, Bryon, Sylvia, Tiffany, Megan, and so very many loving friends and neighbors. Thanks to the wonderful staff at Discovery Care as well as those at Home Health and Hospice of Montana.

The Celebration of Life service for John will be at 10:00 A.M., May 4, 2016, at Daly-Leach Chapel, conducted by Dr. Dan Rudd. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Bitterroot Humane Society. Please come and help us celebrate!
