DARBY  - Norman Cary Hiatt died in his home near Darby, MT on August 30, 2016, with Linda, his wife of 33 years, by his side.

Cary was born on December 25, 1946, in Redmond, OR, to Charles and Dorothy Hiatt. Cary, his sister Charlene and his brother Jon were raised in Fremont, CA.

After attending the College of the Siskiyous in northern California, Cary moved to Montana in 1977 to work for the U.S. Forest Service and, as he often said, “to build a cabin in the woods and wait for the Lord to change the world to the good."

Six years later, he and Linda were married and they built that cabin together and explored and enjoyed the wilderness and backcountry of the Bitterroots and surrounding area – an area that they both loved and about which Cary often said, “Why go anywhere, when you’re already here.”

After Cary retired from the U.S. Forest Service in 2005, the friendships formed during his 28 years there deepened and endured. His deep spiritual beliefs sustained and comforted him. As he explained, "The best is yet to come."

Cary was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Dorothy Hiatt; and his brother Jon Hiatt.

Cary is survived by and his life celebrated and cherished by his wife, Linda; son, Dave Hiatt and wife Julie of Salmon, ID; daughter, Sandy Offill and husband Kelly of Livermore, CA; and sister, Charlene Laymon and husband AJ of San Jose, CA. Cary's children blessed him with five beautiful grandchildren, Brittany and Tyler Offill of Livermore, CA and Joseph, Jessie and Jacob Hiatt of Salmon, ID. Time spent with his family was precious to Cary.

No service is planned. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to Marcus Daly Hospice in appreciation for the kindness, compassion and excellent care they bestowed upon Cary and his family.

Please remember Cary as the strong yet gentle man that he was.
