Paul and I were so sorry to hear about Dick's passing. Sandra and
Dick were very good friends of my parents, Marge and Wally Crawford. I have so many wonderful memories of them both. Years ago Sandra took me down to her basement to let me pick out two antique mixing bowls for my collection. I had them in my home in Spokane for many years and have recently moved them to our new home in Corvallis. I will never forget all the wonderful dinner parties that we were fortunate to share with Sandra and Dick. Your mom's wonderful laugh and straight forward advice and stories that your dad shared about outdoor adventures and fishing exploits are treasured remembrances. For the last couple of years Paul felt blessed that he was able to join your dad and the group of men that met at Memories Cafe for lunch every month and shared lots of stories about "the old days". Your parents were tremendous people and their spirits will live on in all the wonderful memories that people share.

My day was always brightened when Dick and Sandra visited Chapter One Book Store. Their visits were a shining example of how human interactions should go -- stories, laughs, serious discussions, and genuine affection. (Also, I knew that someone would leave with a new cookbook!)

Dick surprised me once, bringing in a Hawaiian style shirt, bedecked with tropical flowers and bikini-clad women, lounging or water skiing. "My kids gave me this damn shirt and I'll never wear it. I figured YOU might, though," he said, handing it over to me. I agreed to accept it on one condition -- that whenever I wore it, I would tell people who it came from. I have worn it often in the decade or more since I received it, and have always kept my promise, so that Dick's name is still attached to the gaudy garment. I'll continue to wear it, and to think of him and his family every time -- and I'll continue to tell people from whom I got it!

Thanks for many years of good memories, Dick, and for a great example of how to live.

So sorry to hear of Dick's passing. Though I never worked with him on the Bitterroot I came to know him after he retired. I remember talking with him as he was walking the dog and he shared his knowledge of local USFS history freely with a new Ranger. That was beneficial to me. He was kind and thoughtful and very highly regarded by many in the Forest Service and the community. He contributed greatly and will be missed.

So sorry to hear about your dad's passing. I know he led a good life and had no regrets. What more could one ask for?
