Michael Ray Olson

“A life that touches others goes on forever,” and so it is with our dear father, grandfather, brother and friend.  Michael Ray Olson of Hamilton passed away unexpectedly on New Year’s Day with his two sons, Darrel and Mark at his side.

Mike was born July 1st, 1946 in Hamilton to Elmer and Grace (Hahn) Olson.  He lived his life in the Bitterroot like many of his family before him.  Mike will be remembered as the strength and glue of our family.  Rarely did a holiday, birthday or anniversary went by without receiving a call or card from Mike.  He loved his family and hosted many summer family reunions throughout the years.  We will all remember the laughs, love and good times that were shared with family at Mike’s house.  Mike was so proud of his children and grandchildren and sharing time with them was his greatest joy.

Mike was a hardworking man even through the toughest of times.  When he lost his legs at the age of 29 to a logging accident, he went on to learn the trade of welding to support his family.  He never complained about what happened, he just stood up on those prosthetics, mastered his trade and carried on.  He was an inspiration to us all, and loved beyond words.

Mike was preceded in death by his father, Elmer Olson; mother, Grace Jean Hahn Olson Schara; brother, Arne and bother-in-law, Ted Hoerner. 

He is survived by his longtime friend and loving partner, Diana Stoner; siblings, Wayne (Judie) Olson, Lola Hoerner, Jim Olson, Rod (Cheri) Olson and Debbie (Jim) Spaulding.  He is also survived by his children, Darrel Stevens, Mark (Christy) Olson, Donna (Andrew) Brand; grandchildren, Michael, Breanna, Cayle (Vonie), Taylor (Josh), Layne, Laycie, Marissa, Allie and two great-grandchildren.  Mike also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. We are all blessed to have been a part of his life.

A memorial service and gathering will be held Saturday, January 6th at 1:00 PM at Daly-Leach Chapel, 1010 W Main Street in Hamilton.
