HAMILTON – Oliver Benner Long passed peacefully at home, Monday, November 18, 2019, surrounded by family. He was born in Glasgow, Montana to Norman and Mary Long on January 16, 1925.
He served as Fireman First Class in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946, aboard the U.S.S. Sheridan, earning multiple medals for his service during World War II.
After his time in the military, Oliver met Mildred Carman Brown. They fell in love and were married on May 24, 1947. Together with Mildred’s kids, Ralph and Jeanie, they also had three children, Gerald, Mary and Gloria.
Oliver carved out a career in carpentry and construction, building a legacy throughout the Bitterroot Valley. He enjoyed creative woodworking and many trips to the local hardware store.
Oliver was preceded in death by his wife Mildred; parents, Norman and Mary Long; brothers Norman (Bud), Walter and Forrest; son, Gerald Long; grandchildren, Robert and John Donaldson, David Long and Jason Brown.
Oliver is survived by his children Mary Harris, Gloria Anderson, Ralph (Butch) Brown and Jeanie Brown Long; grandchildren, Jana Grenn, Becky Harris, James Harris, Sharon Donaldson, Mary Jo Donaldson, Mike Brown, Debbie Miller, Diane Long and Danny Long; many great and great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Graveside services for Oliver will be held on Friday July 3, 2020 at 12:00 p.m., at the Corvallis Cemetery.
