Alfred B. Newman

November 15, 1920 — May 17, 2013

Alfred B. Newman, of Hamilton, passed away peacefully Friday, May 17th at the Discovery Care Center in Hamilton.
He was born November 15th, 1920 to Fred and Louise Ohlson Newman on the family ranch south of Hamilton. He was the youngest of three children, a brother Lester Newman and sister Melba Newman Kern. He grew up during the Depression years of 1930's, learning young the art of survival. The family farmed, raised a garden, hunted and fished to provide for every day necessities. Out of necessity came a great love of the outdoors. He was interested in all aspects of nature, but was especially fascinated by rocks, and soon discovered that is where his interests lie. After graduating from high school, Alfred went on to pursue his education at the School of Mines, in Butte, Mt. There he became a member of the Theta Tau Fraternity for Professional Engineers. After graduation, Alfred worked in various towns throughout the Western United States. He spent quite a bit of time in Nevada, where he became a member of the Elks Lodge. Upon retirement, Alfred settled in Salmon, Idaho. He loved the small town and its close proximity to the Salmon River. He spent his retirement with his fly rod in hand, working his way down the river to North Fork, in search of the perfect ripple, a fish for dinner, and a cold draft beer at the end of the day well spent.
Alfred was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Lester; and his sister Melba.
Alfred is survived by his niece, Bette Jones of Hamilton; great-nephews, David Jones of Wyoming, Michael (Natalie) Jones of Hamilton, and Darrin (Melanie and Tucker) Jones also of Hamilton.
As per his request, there will not be a memorial service. Arrangements are under the care of the Daly-Leach Chapel in Hamilton.
We ask family and friends to each honor Alfred in their own way.
