Arlo O. Campbell

February 23, 1929 — January 17, 2012

Arlo Olsen Campbell
On January 17th 2012 Arlo Campbell lost his long and hard fought battle with kidney and heart disease and was called home to the arms of his loving Savior. Through his own courage and strength he was able to remain at home to be cared for by his family during this difficult final illness. Although his passing was a tender mercy Arlo will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.
Arlo was born on Feb. 23, 1929 in Pocatello Idaho to Clark Golden and Agnes Olsen Campbell. He was raised in Weston Idaho with his two brothers and three sisters.
At the age of 21 Arlo joined the Navy and was stationed on the Aircraft Carrier USS Boxer. He served in the Navy for four years and was on active duty during the Korean War after which he was honorable discharged.
Arlo was a man of many hats during his life, after serving in the Navy he worked construction and concrete, picked fruit, worked timber and then decided he wanted to someday be his own boss. He started selling vacuum cleaners door to door during which time he knocked on the door of Miss Greta Jane Swansen. Little did he know than how that door would change his life forever.
The young couple was married in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho on Oct. 1st 1958, they have been by each others side for 53 years, most of which was in Hamilton. Arlo was a devoted husband and father. He taught his children the importance of a strong work ethic, family devotion and service to others.
Arlo provided for his family through a number of entrepreneurial endeavors including the Viking Sew and Vac and furniture stores in Hamilton and Missoula. Arlo and Greta opened The Fabric Shop in the late 60's in Hamilton and in the 70's the Village Department Store in Stevensville. In his spare time he some how managed to buy, refurbish and rent a number of commercial properties in Hamilton, grass certainly did not grow under Arlo's feet.
Although he lead a very busy life Arlo enjoyed his favorite past times of hunting and fishing. Arlo was an avid fisherman and passionate about the sport. He fished from Alaska to Hawaii and many places in between. Arlo later in life, as a semi retired person, turned a hobby into a business as he honed his skills as a wood turner and produced beautifully crafted items. Lastly, Arlo enjoyed traveling with Greta and seeing different parts of the country and world.
Although Arlo had health problems for many years his fighting spirit kept him going, he had a long, full and blessed life. He worked hard, developed many talents and had a family who loved him dearly and will miss him. Arlo, along with his family, was a life long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
His parents, Clark and Agnes Campbell, his brothers Bryce and Urcle, and his sisters LaJet and Yvonne preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Greta and daughter Tamara Campbell of Hamilton. Daughter Brenda (Fred Keilbart) and their children Jacob (Jen), Kimberly, Trevor and Samantha and four great grandchildren of Lakeville MN. Daughter Marci (Perry Oaks) and their children Branden, Brittany, Jessica and Jared of Kaysville UT, his sister Parleen Shear, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials can be sent to the Wounded Warrior Project or Marcus Daly Hospice.
