Arthur A. Howard, 91, of Corvallis passed away Tuesday, December 20, 2016. He was born June 23, 1925, in Vallejo, California, the son of Arthur Luallen Howard and Victoria (Blackwood) Howard.
Art was raised in Vallejo, California, where he attended high school. While growing up, he enjoyed outdoor activities with his extended family: camping, hunting and fishing. His high school sport of choice was track & field. He was active during his teenage years in the Methodist church youth group, where he met Marjorie Smith, who would later become his wife of 69 years.
In 1943 Art joined the Seabees, a newly formed branch of the Navy, and served with the Marines during the WWII Pacific campaign. After the war, he settled in Sonoma, California, where he reconnected with Marjorie, who in June of 1947 became his wife. Art and Marj raised four children in Sonoma. In 1971 they moved with their youngest child David, to Corvallis, Montana.
Art was employed by Kaiser Steel in California as a planner and estimator, and also enjoyed ranching. In Montana, he pursued ranching and also owned and operated a Lapidary & Jewelry store in Corvallis for many years. He was involved in many community organizations during his life including Boy Scouts, Natural History Museums and Fish & Wildlife Hunter Safety programs in Sonoma Valley; the Bitter Root RC and D, and the Methodist Men’s Group. His hobbies included camping, hiking, hunting, fishing and gardening.
He is survived by his wife Marjorie of Corvallis, daughter Judith and husband Randy of Sonoma, CA; two sons: Daniel and wife Denise of Monroe, WA, Thomas and wife Carmen of Petaluma, CA; 10 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his son David.
Services will be held Saturday, December 31, 2016 at 11 a.m. at the Corvallis United Methodist Church with Reverend Debra Wacker officiating. Interment will take place immediately following at the Corvallis Cemetery; reception will follow at the Corvallis United Methodist Church. Military honors will be presented by the U.S. Navy and the Corvallis American Legion.
