Betty Jean Wetzsteon

June 19, 1929 — January 9, 2015

Betty Jean Wetzsteon, 85 of Sula passed away Friday, January 9th at the Remington in Hamilton. She was born in 1929 in Morristown, SD and had a twin sister Bonnie. Her family moved to a dairy in Darby where she graduated from Darby High School. She attended the University of Montana and worked for university president McCain as a nanny. She transferred with president McCain and graduated from Kansas State University. She was able to travel with president McCain's family throughout Europe and was able to relate her travel experience to life in the Bitterroot Valley.
She returned home to Darby and worked as a teacher. She was an accomplished piano player and played with bands for dances throughout the Bitterroot. Later in life she played from memory when she could no longer see the sheet music. She married Marvin Wetzsteon in 1960 and moved to Sula to raise a family on the ranch. She taught piano and was active in 4-H. She was famous for baking and cooking for haying crews. No one went hungry with Betty cooking.
She was active in community service, including many years on the Darby School Board, Sula Women's Club, and was a founder of the Sula Quick Response Unit. She was a dedicated weather observer for nearly 40 years and received the John Campanius Holm Award from the National Weather Service for outstanding accomplishments in the field of meteorological observations.
She was preceded in death by her husband Marvin and survived by her sons Brian and Bob, and grandchildren Alyssa, Rachel, Ben, and John.
Private family services will be held at a later date.
