DARBY - Brenda J. Sampietro, 74, of Darby, Montana, passed away peacefully at home on July 9th, surrounded by her loving family and dear friends.
Born in Visalia, California, Brenda was the daughter of Walter and Mary Caskey. She graduated from Mt. Whitney High School and worked in her family’s business, Caskey Paper Company, eventually taking it over.
A natural cowgirl at heart, Brenda spent years riding with Riata Ranch, where she developed a deep love for horses. She never lost that connection—horses remained a lifelong passion and source of peace, freedom, and joy.
In 1974, Brenda welcomed her son, John McLaughlin. On October 6, 1984 she married the love of her life, Steven Sampietro, and embraced his two sons, Matt and Nick as her own. Together, they raised their family in Visalia.
Brenda spent years volunteering with the Battered Women’s Shelter in Visalia, where she served on the board, dedicating herself to helping others.
In 2007, Brenda and Steven moved to Darby after falling in love with the Bitterroot Valley during a motorcycle ride. They instantly knew they had found their forever home. Their home became a warm and welcoming place, always filled with laughter, storytelling, and Brenda’s signature wit. She had a gift for turning strangers into friends and spreading laughter wherever she went.
Brenda was a member of the Altar Society at St. Philip’s Catholic Church and a passionate advocate for drug awareness, prevention, and education. As a board member of The Jonah and Travis Drug Awareness Foundation, Brenda worked tirelessly in honor of her grandson to bring light and hope to others.
Brenda is survived by her husband, Steven; their children and spouses, John and Janell McLaughlin, Matt Sampietro, Nick and Molly Sampietro; seven grandchildren; her brother Kevin Caskey and their dear friends.
