Carl Wesley Spoonheim

July 18, 1921 — May 21, 2014

Carl Wesley Spoonheim passed away May 21, 2014 while in Hospice Care at Discovery Care Center. He was born July 18, 1921 in Turner, MT to Mary Helen (Snoball) and Christian Wegner Spoonheim and was the second of seven children. He attended a one room school house near his family homestead in the country until the 8th grade. He started high school, but had to quit so he could go to work to help support his family. He later obtained his GED. He also attended an NYA (National Youth Association) camp in Laurel, MT where he learned his woodworking skills. He was drafted into the Army, and from boot camp went to Lincoln, NE where he was assigned to the Army/Air Corps. He was stationed in the Philippine Islands during WW II. He was a crew chief on a P61 Black Widow Night Fighter and also served as a gunner when the need arose. After his honorable discharge in Seattle WA he returned to Montana and became employed by Gambles-Skogmo and worked for them in Gt. Falls, Glasgow, Havre and eventually managing the Hamilton Gambles store moving here in 1961.
He was married to Lorraine Lechtbold and they had one son, Richard.
On June 1, 1957 Carl married his beloved wife, Evelyn Anderson Arthur, in Havre and they would have been married 57 years on June 1, 2014. He gained a daughter, Linda VanSickle and son, Clifford (Skip) Arthur through this marriage.
In July 1977 Carl and Evelyn purchased the Salmon (Idaho) Home Center Store and in 1987 they sold the store and retired back to Hamilton.
Carl was a member of the Eagles, Elks, Golden Ages, Senior Center, American Legion and held an "Honorary" Lifetime membership at the Hamilton Golf Club. He served as President of the Board of Directors of the Hamilton Golf Club the year the course purchased the land for the "now" back nine holes. He was a charter member and served as "Wagon Master" for several years of the International Roadrunners Golf group which included Norm Hefty, John Morhead and Glen Mitchell.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Melvin and three sisters, Mable, Vilma and Gladys.
Carl is survived by his loving wife, Evelyn and sons, Richard (Rick) Spoonheim, Clifford (Skip) Arthur and daughter, Linda (Jim) VanSickle; also surviving are two brothers, Robert(Bob) and Norman along with many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by the pride and joys of his life, his four grandsons, Mike(Lisa) Langston, Tim (Molly) Thole, Craig (Tracy) Thole and Aaron Spoonheim and granddaughter, Heidi Lynn (Reuben) Silva, along with four great granddaughters, Madison, Tess, Taylor and Lily and one great grandson, Braden. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Rest in peace to the most wonderful husband, father and grandfather a family could ever hope to have.
