DARBY - Carrol Leonard Sundet, affectionately known as "Whitey" to all who knew him, was born on August 22, 1927, in Sidney, Montana. He passed away on February 13, 2026, at the age of 98.

Raised on Montana farms during the Great Depression, Whitey developed a deep understanding of life's true priorities—hard work, family, and the simple joys of the outdoors. This foundation shaped his resilient and grounded character throughout his long life.

In search of adventure during World War II, he joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific Theatre, where he experienced combat, most notably at Okinawa “shooting down Zeros”. His service instilled in him a sense of duty and courage that carried forward in all he did.

After the war, Whitey traveled across the United States, working as a lineman while building a life and starting a family. He eventually settled in Portland, Oregon, with his beloved wife, Marzita Mae (Loomis) Sundet. They shared a devoted marriage of 65 years until her passing on April 2, 2020, in Darby.

In Portland and beyond, Whitey embraced family and community life fully. He coached Little League Baseball, nurturing young athletes with patience and enthusiasm. An avid gardener, hunter, and fisherman, he cherished time outdoors—whether tending his garden or pursuing game in the wild.

Upon retirement, Whitey returned to his Montana roots, settling in Darby. There, he reignited his passion for horses and mules, often packing them into the wilderness for deer and elk hunts or simply for peaceful relaxation amid nature's beauty.

Whitey lived a full, adventurous, and family-centered life, leaving behind a legacy of quiet strength, love for the land, and devotion to those closest to him. He will be remembered fondly by his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched.

A true son of Montana, Whitey will be remembered for his wartime experiences, his steady presence, and the legacy of a life richly lived in harmony with family and the wild places he loved. Graveside services with Full Military Honors will be held Tuesday, February 24, 2026 at 2:00 PM at Lone Pine Cemetery in Darby. Arrangements are under the care of the Daly-Leach Chapel.
