STEVENSVILLE - Daniel James Cavanaugh, 92, of Stevensville passed away Sunday, December 21, 2014 at the Missoula Health and Rehab. He was born October 7, 1922 in Glendive, MT the son of Dominik and Virginia (Schumacher) Cavanaugh.
After graduated from high school in Glendive, Dan attended MSU in Bozeman. He then enlisted in to the US Marine Corps and served for 2 years. Dan then enlisted into the US Army in 1943 and served until his honorable discharge in 1946.
After his discharge, Dan attended the University of Chicago and earned his PhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry. He was a professor at the University of Alabama and Tulane University where he also did research work. Later Dan worked as a Biochemist in Edgewood, Maryland and also worked at IBM in Rockville, Maryland.
Dan married Dorothy Dean Mead on August 4, 1962 and together they had 1 daughter, Gael. He developed a fondness for speed and started driving race cars. One of his favorites was the Volvo P1800. Dan was a member of the Sports Car Club of America.
After working at IBM, Dan became a freelance photographer. He loved taking photos of kids, animals, plants, and anything natural.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Dee M. Cavanaugh. He is survived by his daughter, Gael Marie Page and husband Todd; 2 granddaughters, Holly Ann McVey and her significant other, James Kellough and Heather Marie McVey Rodriguez and husband Frankie Rodriguez; 5 great-grandchildren, Brice Anthony McVey, Sebastian Lee McVey, Brandi Twardowski-Rodriguez, Ciaira Montana Rodriguez and Paytyn Mercedeez Rodriguez all of Missoula; and 4 nephews, Sean Cavanaugh and family of Tampa, FL, Tom Cavanaugh and family of South Carolina, Patrick Cavanaugh and family of Washington, DC and Kevin Cavanaugh and family of Texas.
No formal services will be held. The family would like to thank the nursing staff at Missoula Health and Rehab and Rocky Mountain Hospice for their kindness and support. Dan was grateful.
