Robert Daniel “Dan” Weer

Robert Daniel Weer, 90, known to family and friends as Dan or Danny, passed away peacefully at his home in Darby, Montana, on April 23, 2026 from natural causes. He was surrounded by family and friends who loved him very much.

Dan was born October 10, 1935, on a farm in Dagmar, Montana to Robert and Ermalynn (Thull) Weer. He was the third of four children. He spent his early years in eastern Montana and western North Dakota before his family settled in the Bitterroot Valley, where Dan graduated from Hamilton High School in 1953. After completing Telegraphers school in Spokane, Washington, he went to work for the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1955 as a depot agent, working in many small communities throughout Montana and Idaho before settling in Darby, Montana. Dan also proudly served his county in the United States Army from 1958 to 1961. He had many stories about his time stationed in Germany. After his service, Dan returned to work for the railroad, a career spanning forty-two years.

Dan married the love of his life, Vera Mae Anderson in 1969. Together they built a life in Darby full of family, friendships, and community. Dan and Vera had two children, Dana & David, whom they adored. Dan and Vera shared more than fifty wonderful years together before her passing in 2021, and he carried her in his heart every day after. Together they owned and operated the Valley Bar in Darby, MT, the Buckskin Inn in Cooke City, MT, and a Ranch in Conner, MT. Times that gave them countless stories, lifelong friendships, and a place at the center of the community they enjoyed.

Dan was a smart and thoughtful man, with a quick wit, and a lasting smile. He loved to learn and had a gift of teaching. He would share his knowledge of the world around him freely with anyone willing to listen – the topics were vast, and interesting, often landing on his knowledge of the Bitterroot backcountry, and his experience packing into some notorious hunting and summer camps. Those trips with good horses, friends (some considered Legends), and family, he never forgot. Dan also enjoyed his fishing trips with his family, especially his grandkids and great-grandkids, and would always add an element of humor. While he will be missed by his family and friends, we are all grateful for the time and wonderful memories that will live on.

Dan is survived by his daughter, Dana (Shan) Tompkins; his son David Weer; his brother Gary Weer; his grandchildren, Lynnzie (Dean) Rasmussen, Zachary (Caroline) Tompkins, and Samantha Weer; and his great-grandchildren Lucas, Lane, Madilynn, Marlie, and Abigail.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful people who helped Dan continue to live independently in his home. A service to celebrate Dan’s life will be planned for later this year.
