DELBERT R. CARTER
- Delbert R. Carter, 83 died November 2, 2010, at a care facility in Lewistown, Fergus County, Montana.
- Delbert was born March 6, 1927 in Darrell, Fergus County, Montana, the son of Clay and Huldah (Toogood) Carter. The family homesteaded in the Flatwillow area of Fergus County and moved to Charlo, Montana area in the early 1930's where they farmed. Delbert graduated early from Charlo High School so he could join the Navy during WWII. He was discharged from the Navy after the war ended and he entered college at Montana State University, Bozeman, Montana and graduated with a 4 year degree in Animal Husbandry. He taught school for a short time in Choteau, Montana and then worked for the Malone Ranch in the area. He met Lorraine (Rice) in Choteau and they were married Sept. 14, 1952. They moved to the Westside of the Bitterroot Valley out of Victor, and 10 years later moved to the East side of Corvallis, where they continued ranching and raising his beloved quarter horses and his girls.
- Delbert was active in the Stockgrowers Association in the Bitterroot Valley and instrumental in shipping calves cooperatively to Omaha, Nebraska, to obtain a better price for the stock growers in the Bitterroot. He was recognized for being an active member of the American Quarter Horse Association for over 50 years. He was active in the High School Rodeo Association, the Corvallis Veterans Legion Club and always was a strong supporter of 4-H.
- He was an avid stockman and horseman and raised many registered quarter horses that are used throughout the country. He was still active on his ranch until ill health forced him to leave the ranch October 29, 2010. His horses were always the love of his life.
- He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine, his mother Huldah, father Clay, brothers Gary and Ernest and sisters Hester and Fern. He is survived by his daughters, Dr. Karen Carter of Ponchatoula, Louisiana, Jackie and husband Ray Reynolds of Salmon, Idaho, Gayle and husband Brad Doney of Lewistown, Montana, grandsons, Zach Doney of San Diego, California, Matt Doney, wife Katie and great-granddaughter, Coleigh of Las Vegas, Nevada; brothers, Marvin Carter, Bill Carter; sisters, Irene Olson, Sharon Guenzler, Trudy Ferrier, Clarabelle Barsness and numerous nieces and nephews.
- - The family suggests memorials in lieu of flowers to the Corvallis High School Rodeo Club, to be left or sent to the Daly-Leach Chapel, 1010 W. Main Street, Hamilton, MT 59840
