BOZEMAN - Doris Atwood Stocks of Bozeman passed away Friday, June 13, 2014 at High Country Care. She was born May 14, 1930 in Raymond, Alberta Canada.
When mom was 6 months old, she traveled by covered wagon pulled by a team of mules from Alberta Canada to the Bitterroot Valley. She grew up poor and cried when President Roosevelt died because her dad told her that Franklin gave them five dollars per month for food and she did not know what they would eat when Franklins' five dollars went away.
As a wife and mother she worked so hard and so long and always made certain the pantry was filled with food. She waited tables at the 4-B's restaurant in Deer Lodge. Some nights, the tips were meager but she always brought home a treat of some kind, usually candy, for her seven children.
Almost every Sunday, she dressed her children in their Sunday finest and herded them to the Assembly of God Church. God and family " everything else was little more than details and distractions. Side by side with her husband Ivan, she raised seven children and never had a bill turned in for collection and never spent a dime on alcohol. When the children left, Doris and Ivan moved back to the Bitterroot and, for a few years, basked in the comfort and contentment of a hard-earned retirement and the constant company of grandchildren. For a time " she was happy. Then Ivan was devastated by Alzheimers and mother's world began crumbling around her. Ivan died and mom moved first to Missoula and then to Bozeman always under the constant care of at least one of her five daughters.
A hard life, and not a perfect one but her prayers were powerful and constant. God and family, she has left one to be with the other. Peace, mother, and rest. Finally rest.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband Ivan Stocks, her parents Martin and Matilda Atwood, her sisters: Bessie, OraBell, Jaunita, Opal, Lizzie, Norma; brothers: Ivan, Larry and her twin " Darryl, daughter in law Lillian Fike Stocks, great grandchildren Rachel and Christian Fletcher.
