VICTOR - Dorothy Patterson was a devoted wife, loving mother, and talented quilter. Born in 1943, Dorothy grew up in downtown Detroit at a time when Detroit was a vibrant, exciting city. Her childhood was full of dance classes, going to Tigers and Redwings games with her dad, and working in the family carpet store.
After high school she studied Russian at Wayne State University and hoped to be a United Nations translator. Marriage and children ended her college career early. She spent the next 11 years as an Air Force wife, raised three children, and did her best to keep a bad marriage together. 12 moves to 10 states and 2 countries later she divorced and started living life on her own terms.
She finished her Associates Degree at Antelope Valley College and eventually got a job at Antelope Valley High School. She always said the best part of her job was working with kids. Her last job at AVHS was as registrar and she’d want you all to know that no one ever asked for your “permanent record.”
She had many friends but her best was Kathy Carothers – they had many great times together. Later she met the love of her life, Doyle. On their second date he told her if she wanted to be part of his life she’d have to move to Montana someday. They packed a suitcase and made the drive that night. 18 hours later they were standing on 20 acres outside of Victor, staring at the stars and marveling at the Montana beauty. It was love at first sight times 2.
Dotty and Doyle’s retirement in Montana was blessed with many great friends. Summers were filled with visits from friends and family from all over the country. She loved to garden and created a truly special space filled with flowers, blueberries for the grandchildren, and delicious vegetables. Her dogs were faithful companions on long walks around the property and to the falls.
She was a long-time active member of the Bitterroot Quilters' Guild. She made and donated many wonderful quilts to Quilts for Kids, the American Cancer Society and the Safari Club fund raisers. Dotty never hesitated to help a fellow quilter with a task or help with a sewing question. She believed in sharing tips and techniques to further the fun and enthusiasm for quilting.
After surviving breast cancer – years later Dotty was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. She was scrappy right up until the end. She took her last breath with husband Doyle by her side and a big Labrador and shaggy springer spaniel by her feet.
Dorothy never wanted much attention and didn’t want a memorial. She is survived by her husband, Doyle; sons Scott, Sean and Ray; and of course her dogs Brody and Rigby; and many many great friends. She loved you all and wishes you all the best.
