Elbert E. Stallcop, 90 of Stevensville, passed away Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at the Bitterroot Valley Living Center in Stevensville.
Elbert was born July 2, 1922 in Havre, Montana the son of the late Halcie Paul and Harriett Lillian Stallcop. Elbert's father was one of the original homesteaders in Hill County, Montana. The family eventually accumulated over 4,000 acres of wheat land. He spent his childhood on the homestead farm attending a country school with his brothers and sisters. At the age of ten the family relocated to Havre during the school year but spent the remainder of the year on the farm. Soon after he graduated from Havre High School he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served for the entirety of World War II. He served as ships baker during quiet times and as the ships range finder during battle. He retired from military service after the war ended as a 1st Class Baker. He enrolled at the University of Montana and graduated with a degree in Pharmacy.
Elbert has three children. They moved to Southern California in 1957 where he purchased and ran a very successful drug store and opened a clinic. He was instrumental in establishing a community hospital. He was an esteemed member of the community. He organized and financed community 4th of July fireworks displays for several years.
He moved back to the Bitterroot Valley in 1988 and made Hamilton his home for the remainder of his life. He enjoyed restoring vintage cares and collecting guns, including a cannon. He traveled extensively throughout the world. On many occasions his children accompanied him. His children were the joy of his life.
He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Eugene Stallcop of Nampa, ID and Emmett Stallcop of Columbia Falls, MT.
Survivors include his two daughters, Cynthia Bomar of San Marcos, CA and Nancy Goodman of Hamilton, MT; son, Thomas Stallcop of Hemet, CA; sisters, Sylvia Thompson of Orange, TX and Myrtle Rhodes of Alma, AR; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
Private family interment will take place at the Western Montana State Veterans Cemetery in Missoula.
