Elizabeth Virginia Hardy

November 6, 1920 — April 1, 2012

Elizabeth Virginia Hardy, 91, of Corvallis passed away Sunday, April 1, 2012 at the Marcus Daly Hospice and Palliative Care center. She was born November 6, 1920 in Norton Kansas to Martin and Elizabeth Mitchell.
She was raised on a wheat farm in Kansas, growing up during the Dust Bowl and the Depression. After graduating from high school she drove a school bus in Garden Plain, KS to help support her family, and later entered Nurses Training at St. Joseph's Hospital in Wichita. As a newly-minted nurse she ventured out to San Francisco to join two of her sisters, finding a job as a nurse at the Kaiser Shipyards in Oakland, CA and at Kaiser Permanente in San Francisco. As news reports came in of the Battle of the Bulge, she joined the Army Nurse Corps, completed basic training, and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. After the War she met and married Richard James Hardy, of Buffalo, NY. They lived in California, Colorado, and Montana during their 59 years of marriage.
Elizabeth enjoyed socializing with friends, painting, woodcarving, playing piano and ukulele, and singing with the Sweet Adelines.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her sisters Alice, Kathleen, Alma, Loretta, Agnes Edna, and her brothers Frank and Earl. She is survived by son Bruce of Longmont, Colorado, son Richard of Corvallis, Montana, daughter Mary Anne of PoulsboA
