Evelyn Fay Lowman
Loving Mother / Grandmother, Caring Friend, Dedicated Teacher and an "Independent Woman".
Evelyn Fay Lowman, 94, of Darby passed away peacefully in the presence of her family May 31, 2009.
Evelyn was born December 13, 1914 to Harry and Hazel (Overturf) Gibford at the family homestead north of Darby. She was raised in Darby along side of her older sister Dora and younger brother Ronald. After high school she worked her way through Dillon Normal College (UM Western). She received a Lifetime Teaching Certificate. She later returned to receive her four year degree.
Evelyn began teaching in Wolf Point, MT. She returned to teach in Darby. There she purchased the family home from her parents. She met the love of her life, Delbert Leslie Lowman. They were married June 6, 1939, in the home in which she was born.
Throughout her 30 year tenure as a teacher, she taught in numerous locations throughout Montana, always returning to the Bitterroot where she raised her three children.
Giving of herself through teaching, caring for others, and sharing with family and friends was just part of her gentle, kind, and loving nature. Throughout her life she had an unwavering faith in the Lord. Her love for all humanity reached far beyond her family and friends. She gave of herself through numerous church, charity and community organizations.
Evelyn had a passion for the great outdoors, gardening, huckleberry picking, and swimming. Until the age of 90 she could be found swimming in her pond with her loyal companion, Boots. Her zest for life clearly showed whenever she heard music she liked. Her eyes would sparkle, her hands would begin to wave, or fingers tap. Then her feet would dance. Oh, how she loved to dance. She found great pleasure in collecting, writing, and reciting poetry.
Her love of life was never more apparent then on Mother's Day each spring. Family and friends would gather to catch up on the past and plan for the future.
