Herb Dyer Cleveland left us March 23, 2012, to the company of his son Steve, his parents, the late Lyle and Lillian Cleveland, his sister Lila and his dear nephew Doug.
Herb was born on February 2, 1937 at the family home on Hamilton's west side. He grew up in the sheltering company of his older siblings exploring the ranch and the riverbottom wonders. He graduated from Hamilton High School in 1955. After a year of vocational training in Spokane, he returned to the valley and met Ruth Slocum from Stevensville. Thus began their fifty-five years of life together. He spent his employment career in building contracting, making things work and refitting what didn't work. His heavy-duty weedwhacker, Quantum, is a case in point. His last employment was as Ravalli County Fairgrounds Maintenance Supervisor for a number of years, the high-point of his work career. The fairgrounds will remain a touchstone of remembrance for us. His life there left him with memories of the many fine persons he encountered.
Herb is survived by his wife Ruth at the home Herb built for them in 1995, his son Bob and daughter Jacki in Nevada, and daughter Carma in Idaho. His son Steve preceded him in death in an oil field incident in 1984.
Herb wished for his loved ones and friends to remember him as they knew him. He requested no services. Cremation has taken place at Daly-Leach Memorial Chapel. Condolences may be left for the family at www.dalyleachchapel.com.
The family plans a gathering near the Fourth of July when they welcome his friends to attend as they place his ashes at Steve's grave in Riverview Cemetery in Hamilton.
