Herbert Marvin Bounds, 93, was peacefully welcomed into the presence of his Savior on October 17, 2025 in Hamilton, MT. He was asked just a few days before what he wanted to be remembered for? He replied, “An average guy who did his best to serve Jesus.” That is indeed his legacy, one of trust and faith in God who sent a Savior so that he could have a relationship with Him. He gave his life to Christ at an early age and remained faithful to that decision until it culminated the day of his death with his true excitement to finally see his Savior.

Born March 1, 1932 in Altadena, California to William Marvin Bounds and Dorcas Adelia (Leggett) Bounds. He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his beloved wife of 71 years, Esther Louise, and his three siblings: AnneBeth Watson, Wesley Bounds, and Ruth Rickert.

Survived by their two adult-children, Carlene, married to Dr. Bill Rupp, and a son, Bobby, married to Tammy. There are three grandchildren: Jim Rupp, married to Tiffany; Tanya Smith married to Matt; Todd Bounds married to Robin. They have eight great grandchildren: Natalie, Ethan and Brody Smith; Maddie, Bella and Layton Rupp; Riley and Piper Bounds.

In his early teens, Herb met the love of his life at church when Esther Louise Logsdon moved just two doors down from him. After graduating from Pasadena Academy (HS) they were married just weeks before Herb was shipped off to the Korean Conflict on the USS Pasig, serving in the Navy just shy of two years.

Anxious to get back to his bride and life, even before being released from the military base he enrolled in classes at Pasadena College (later called Point Loma Nazarene University) and Esther sat in his classes taking notes for the first month for him. The rest would be up to him. Having been honorably discharged, he then passed every class, while also playing basketball, tennis and baseball for the college. After graduating, he coached basketball and baseball at his alma mater, Pasadena College (PLNU), as well as teaching US History at Temple City High School until his early retirement.

Herb received many trophies and awards throughout the years, but he was especially appreciative when he was selected NAIA District Three Coach of the Year for the 1968-69 season.

Semi-retired in 1974 they moved to Hamilton, MT where Herb took a job at the Hamilton Golf Course as the Grounds Keeper, while also building a log cabin for he and his wife, Esther, where they lived until they passed.

Herb was a gentle, patient man with a keen sense of humor. He had a way of bringing a smile to anyone he came in contact with. During his retirement he did a lot of woodworking, fly-fishing and ate large bowls of ice cream. His relationship with God was always foremost in his mind, and he served in many capacities over the years at Mountain View Wesleyan Church. A man of deep faith who loved his God, his family and his friends. He will certainly be missed.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gideon’s International, one of Herb’s favorite charities since the Bible had such a significant impact on his own life.
