d. June 8, 2023

Hamilton

John Wheaton Sargent Jr of Hamilton, MT passed away on June 8 after a protracted battle with pulmonary fibrosis. He will be greatly missed by his loving life partner, Mary Ann of Lolo, MT; his daughter; and the remainder of his family and friends. John’s family is grateful to friends Rich and Jeannie Bonnes for their assistance to John in his final years. Though John was born in the Chicago area, he felt most at home in the mountain west and lived the entirety of his adult life in places like Colorado and New Mexico before making Montana his home for the last 30 years of his life. John’s love of wilderness inspired him to study Forestry Science in college and subsequently accept employment with the US Forest Service in New Mexico. Prior to this, he served in the US Army in a position that allowed him to take advantage of his mastery of the Spanish language. John's interests were diverse. For example, he was a member of the Mayflower Society as a descendent from John Howland, a signatory of the 1620 Mayflower Compact; he was a lifetime benefactor for the National Rifle Association; as well as a lifelong member of the National Geographic Society. For all that John achieved and experienced in his 84 years, his walk with his Creator was the most meaningful. Anyone who knew John knew of his devotion to Christ’s love and his desire to make that love real for others. John’s final resting place will be among the venerable at Western Montana State Veteran's Cemetery, Missoula, MT.
