Katherine Quillian Solberg

June 7, 1947 — October 27, 2022

HAMILTON - Katherine Quillian Solberg, 75, of Hamilton, Montana, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, October 27, 2022, at the family home. She was born June 7, 1947, in Delaware, Ohio, the daughter of the late William F. Quillian, Jr. and Margaret Weigle Quillian.

In 1952, Kathy moved to Lynchburg, Virginia, where her father served as President of Randolph­Macon Woman's College for 26 years. She was raised in Lynchburg and graduated from E. C. Glass High School. She attended Mary Baldwin College, graduating in 1969 with a B.A. in Political Science prior to her stellar career with the Department of Health, Education and Welfare (1969-1977), the USDA Forest Service (1977-1999), and as a consultant/contractor until 2015.

On June 11, 1983, she married Terry G. Solberg in Lynchburg. They fostered a dual career with the Forest Service. Kathy having assignments as the Personnel Officer,  with the Lewis and Clark National Forest, in Great Falls, Montana, and the Flathead National Forest, in Kalispell, Montana, Classification Specialist, Washington, DC, Classification and Employment Group Leader, Pacific Northwest Region, in Portland, Oregon, Administrative Officer, Deschutes National Forest, in Bend, Oregon, and Director of Human Resources, Northern Region, in  Missoula, Montana; until her retirement in September 1999.

Kathy loved music, played the piano, sang in choirs, received many awards and accolades for her organizational and career skills and achievements, and even arranged large RV rallies and planned many gatherings of family and friends, whom she dearly cherished. She was a life member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, and a snowmobiler, hunter, and avid RV enthusiast for thirty years, spending many winters as a snowbird.

Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, William F. Quillian, Jr. and Margaret W. Quillian, and her brother, Robert Mason Quillian.

She is survived by her husband, Terry of Hamilton, Montana; three sons, Craig Solberg of Milton, Wisconsin; Eric Solberg of Ruckersville, Virginia; Grant (Christine) Solberg of Sterling, Alaska; daughter, Dawn Solberg of Idaho Springs, Colorado; seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; sister, Anne Quillian; brother, Bill (Tina) Quillian of Lynchburg, Virginia; sister-in-law, Sue Quillian of Olympia, Washington; canine companion, Misty; plus numerous other relatives and devoted friends.
