Leo B. Smith

February 10, 1935 — June 17, 2014

HAMILTON - Leo B. Smith, 79 of Hamilton passed away Tuesday, June 17, 2014 surrounded by his family at the Marcus Daly Hospice Center. He was born Feb. 10, 1935 in Monmouth, Maine the fourth son of the late H. Maynard and Bernice Burgess Smith. Leo lived in many Maine towns attending numerous schools due to his father's occupation.

On May 21, 1956 he married Mary Aliberti of Portland, Maine they were married 58 years. In 1956 Leo started working at IGA and worked up to the head meat cutter, he moved his family to California in 1962; he began his career as a meat cutter at Safeway. In 1978, Leo moved his family to Polson, MT owned/operated Leo's Custom Meats. In 1984 he and Mary returned to California where Leo worked for Youngs Market Co. in Los Angeles till his retirement. Leo thoroughly enjoyed being a meat cutter for 45 years, after retiring he would come to Polson during hunting season to process game.
Leo is survived by his loving wife, Mary; along with their five children, daughter, Margaret of Hamilton and son-in-law Rick Buchanan; son Michael L. Smith of La Habra, CA; daughter Lucille of Orange, CA and son-in-law Jerry Hernandez, daughter Laura of Polson, son-in-law Jim Clairmont and daughter Michelle Smith Zamiripa of La Habra, CA; ten grandchildren Megan, Jason, Adam, Marielle, Aaron, Brock, Sage, Zoe, Kaitlyn and Reece, five great-grandchildren Solana, Arwen, Maylee, Matteo and Jack; and Marcie Schultz, whom Leo considered his 5th daughter. Other family including numerous nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brother-in-law. Leo is preceded in death by his parents and his three brothers.

In his spare time he loved playing golf and watching the Masters on TV, playing cards, getting together with family and friends, he especially liked playing pool and loved to garden. He enjoyed meeting people, and making friends was his passion, Leo was one of a kind never without a smile. He was a loving husband and the consummate family man, always the one to help others. He will be missed forever!

The Smith family extends its thanks and appreciation to all of the staff at Dr. Eric L. Stern office, Partners Hospice, and Marcus Daly Hospice for their care, friendship and kindness.

The family suggests that memorials be made to the Marcus Daly Hospice Endowment Fund, 1200 Westwood Dr., Hamilton, MT.
