Hamilton Early Saturday morning June 14, 2025, Mae A Schmitt entered heaven and received her angel wings surrounded by loved ones William and Carol Durbin.
Mae was born on December 11, 1943, in Fayetteville, NC to James C. Gibbs and Anner Lee Gibbs. When Mae was about 15 months old, she lost her father and was raised with her siblings by their mother. She learned many of things from her mother, like cooking, cleaning, work ethic but most of all her love for Jesus.
Mae was highly active in her high school years while growing up in Fayetteville. Whatever she put her mind to do she accomplished from being a basketball player, captain of the team, President of the class and Vice-president of the student body. She spoke often about her junior and senior years as a Bus Driver. While a senior in high school she was voted for not 1 but 6 most likely. Most dependable, courteous, studious, likely to succeed, athletic and best leader.
Mae was 21 years old when she met Jerry W Schmitt and moved to Montana. She became a mother to their three children, Carol, Vicki, and Jerry. Mae loved being a mom, she instilled many life learning abilities for wherever life lead them. She taught them how to raise animals, cook, clean, garden, preserve your own food, sew, needle work, native American beadwork, the list goes on and on. During the summers she would gather what was needed so the family could go camping, fishing, among those summer months she would also gather firewood so her family could stay warm in the winter months. Mae was a proud member of the Lumbee Tribe and carried her heritage with honor. Even in her later years she was teaching her Grandchildren her ways from the garden to a recipe.
Mae was also involved in her younger years in softball, baseball, in a bowling league and a 4-H leader. As the years progressed, she became a grandmother and Great Grandmother, which brought her so much joy to see them grow up and just beginning to grow up.
Mae was a lifetime member of the Charlos Heights Community Church. Her faith carried her through life and its trial and tribulations that came her way, she always stayed the course. During her last days before her savior called her home she was still listening to her bible and her daily devotions.
Mae is survived by her daughter Carol (William) Durbin, daughter Vicki (James) Wiberg, brother James Gibbs. Grandchildren/Great Grandchildren Nico Rivera, Damon Stevens, Marisa Mae (Kyle and Rokki aka (Little Miss) Kohn, Manuel (Chloe) Rivera, Samantha Mae Weer, Trey (Beatriz and Noah) Durbin, Arianna (Josh and Avyanna) Butcher, and her fur baby Teddy Bear who will miss her so. Along with nephews, nieces and cousins.
Mae is preceded in death by her only son Jerry F Schmitt, parents James and Anner Lee Gibbs, grandparents on her dad’s side Thomas Frazier Gibbs and Estell Smiling, and Rosa Jane Freeman, on her mom’s side Adnell Locklear and Eula Mae Tyler Locklear Jacobs and Rev. Tommy Jacobs, sister Irene Maultsby.
Until we see each other again fly high my sweet, beautiful angel, we will forever hold you in our hearts.
The celebration of life will be held on Saturday July 19,2025 at the Charlos Heights Community Church at 11 am, located at 1700 Highway 93 So., Hamilton, Mt with a reception to follow.
