Russell "Rick" Roberts
Rick Roberts went on to his next rodeo on February 15, 2010 while surrounded by his three daughters. Rick was 69 years young. Rick fought a long battle with multiple sclerosis for many years. Even though his body was failing, his mind never did. He was always the first one to laugh. He provided wit and humor to any situation and always looked at the funny side of life. Rick loved unconditionally and provided strength to his family.
Rick was a lifelong native of the Bitterroot Valley graduating from Darby High School in 1958. He prided himself being a 4-year letterman in high school football and basketball. Rick served in the Montana Army National Guard for 8 years. His hobbies included diving and acrobats on the trampoline. He enjoyed being in the hills always searching for gold treasurers. He often times said that he would never live anywhere else. His passion was fishing, hunting, camping and taking pack trips into the Selway Wilderness. He provided us with many entertaining stories of his horse pack trips with his buddies. Before his illness he worked for Connor Sawmill in Darby loading boxcars and also spent time as a farrier. Rick will be remembered for his many "shenanigans" while growing up in the valley. He enjoyed telling the stories of "back in the day". There was never a trip to Darby without a story about his adventures.
Rick is survived by his three daughters, Kari Auclair (Jeff McClanahan), grandkids Lindsay, Megan, Keith, and Kyle; daughter Kristi Loiacono (Tony), grandkids Britni and Alexi; daughter Kassie Ashcraft (Paul), grandkids Tyler, Jacob, and Emily and lifelong advocate and friend Jean Roberts. Rick also had four great grandsons. Survivors include siblings Leanne Anderson, Doug Roberts, Barry Roberts, Kim Roberts, and stepmother Frieda Roberts.
Rick is preceded in death by his mother, Violet Roberts, father, Russ Roberts, and brothers Carl and David Roberts. Tap 'er light, Ricky Boy. See you later!
