Stanley H. Schroeder

June 11, 1923 — May 7, 2015

HAMILTON - Stanley H. Schroeder, 91, passed away the evening of May 7, 2015 at his home in Hamilton surrounded by his family and close friends. He was born on June 11, 1923 in Riverside, California, the son of the late Roy E. and Mary A. Schroeder.

He is survived by his daughter, Emily, and by his childhood friend and beloved companion of the last 11 years, Doris Adam. He is also survived by his sister, Marjorie Page, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Stanley was raised on the Jensen Alvarado Ranch in Riverside. During World War II he worked in a water buffalo (tank) plant. He graduated with a BS degree from the University of Colorado in Boulder and later worked for the US Geological Survey for over 30 years doing topographic mapping.

Stanley married Mary Janet Siple on December 31, 1960, and they had one daughter. Stanley's job with the US Geological Survey included travel over much of the western United States, plus Virginia, Hawaii, and Micronesia. He loved trout fishing, hiking, rock collecting, and gardening. There was nothing he couldn't fix, or build, if he could find (or make) the part for it. One of the most valuable lessons he taught his daughter was that she could do anything. He was always encouraging her by saying "you can do it."

He and his family lived in northern Virginia for many years, where he retired from the US Government. After retirement, he and Mary traveled for a while and settled first in Arizona and then in Hamilton. He lost his wife Mary in 2002, and a couple of years later he reconnected with his childhood friend, Doris. He and Doris took great pride in the yard and garden and were able to supply many neighbors with the surplus vegetables and fruit from the trees. Besides gardening and caring for the yard, he also had many political, environmental (Friends of the Bitterroot), and charitable interests in later years.

He will be missed by those who knew him and especially by his family. No public services are scheduled.

Memorials may be made to the Bitterroot Humane Society, PO Box 57, Hamilton, MT 59840.
