Truman John “TJ” Mason April 23, 1946 – November 18, 2025
Truman John Mason, affectionately known as TJ, passed away at his home in Corvallis, Montana, on November 18, 2025, after a courageous four-year battle with dementia. He was 79 years old.
TJ was born on April 23, 1946, in Hardin, Montana, and grew up in Crow Agency. He married Carolyn Garrod on July 12, 1970, and together they raised four children: Troy (Kathryn), Tavis, Trent (Samantha Guymon), and Tylan. Throughout his life, TJ was immensely proud of his family, which grew to include seven grandchildren—Jesse (Kelsey), Dani, Zachary, Matthew, Thaddaeus, Joscelyn, and Freya—and three great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Ember, and Marelle. TJ and Carolyn later divorced in 1987.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Truman and Mable Mason of Hardin, as well as his brothers, Ted (Bernie) and Tom (Carrie McNeese). He is survived by his siblings, Alyce (Edward Strecker) and Terry (Terry) Mason, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins who will remember him with affection.
TJ served his country. He spent part of his military career in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, where he worked as a sergeant and mechanic, and later served in the Army National Guard based in Hamilton, Montana. TJ dedicated many years to the Ravalli County Road Department as a truck driver, supporting his family with steady, hardworking commitment.
Beyond his career, TJ found deep community in the Masonic Temple in Corvallis. He was also an avid outdoorsman who loved spending time in the Bitterroot Mountains, hunting and fishing among the rugged beauty he cherished throughout his life.
A memorial service will be held in the spring, with details to be announced later.
Memorials can be left at Daly-Leach Chapel, www.dalyleachchapel.com, or at Alzheimer’s Association, www.alz.org.
TJ’s family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Daly-Leach Chapel for their compassion and support during this difficult time.
