HAMILTON - Mable D. McKillop, 109, of Hamilton passed away Thursday, July 29, 2021 at the Discovery Care Centre. She was born Feb. 10, 1912 in Hamilton, MT. the daughter of Elmer and Elizabeth Stockman.
Mable attended school at Canyon Creek on Hamilton’s west side, where Hamilton Playhouse is now located. When the Canyon Creek school closed she then attended school in Hamilton and graduated from high school in 1930.
In October 1933, Mable met Herbert McKillop, a handsome young graduate from Corvallis. After a short courtship they married on Dec. 25, 1933. Mable had two daughters: Judy born in 1940 and Nancy born 1944.
Mable began working as one of the first telephone switchboard operators in Hamilton until 1965 when the system switched to dial. She then cleaned the phone booths in Hamilton until 1967. Mable also worked with Ed Leach when he started Daly-Leach Chapel as his receptionist.
Mable was very active in the community. She was a lifetime member of the Order of Eastern Star. She participated in the Hospital Guild and was an avid bowler. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends and embroidering. Many people have received tablecloths, quilts or tea towels that Mable embroidered.
Mable loved living in the Bitterroot and has seen many changes over the past 100 years. She was loved by many and will be dearly missed. Very few people have touched the hearts of so many like Mable has.
Mable is survived by her grandchildren Allan (Debbie) Gill of Frederick, CO,
Carri Lynn (Jim) Ellison, Torrington, WY. and Michelle (Darrin) Maxwell of Plymouth, MN, 4 great- grandchildren and 3 great- great grandchildren and son-in-law Leonard Sokoloski.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Aug. 2, 2021 at 11:00 am at the Daly-Leach Chapel with Pastor Jim Folkerson officiating. Interment will take place in Riverview cemetery in Hamilton with a reception following in the Daly-Leach Chapel Community Room. The family suggests memorials be made to the Order of Eastern Star at Leona Chapter #31, 115 S. 3rd St. Hamilton,MT. 59840. Condolences may be left for the family at www.dalyleachchapel.com.
