PISMO BEACH, CA – Richard Eugene Gwyn, 98, of Pismo Beach passed away Saturday, March 17, 2017 at the Discovery Care Centre in Hamilton where he resided for a year after moving to Hamilton to be near family.  He was born August 30, 1919 in Indianapolis, IN the son of Russell and Hilda (Baughman) Gwyn.

Richard was raised in Indiana where his father was a pastor with the Disciples of Christ Church in Indianapolis.  He attended Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis where he studied art and drafting.  Richard then attended Butler University where he studied business.  He was drafted in 1942 and served with the 2nd Division Army Corps of Engineers during WWII and Korea.

Richard married Dorothy Elizabeth (Betty) Brannan in Indianapolis in 1943 and she passed away in 1976.  He then married Lisa Brown of Santa Maria, CA in 1980 and they remained together until 2002.

Richard was a partner at Advertising Art, Inc. in Indianapolis.  He then moved to southern California in 1964 and started his own business, Ad Arts West in the central coast area, Santa Maria to San Luis Obispo, CA.

Richard enjoyed go-kart racing all over the U.S. and computers and graphics.  He also built his dream home on the California coast in Pismo Beach.  Richard did graphics and promotional materials for the city of Santa Monica and the GenSpan Organization.  He made a historical video titled, “The First Hundred Years of Santa Maria” and worked with numerous magazines and newspapers.

He was known by many in his Pismo Beach neighborhood as the guy who walked Rosie, his beloved Black Standard Poodle.  Richard loved his neighbors, many of whom included him in their parties and even holiday celebrations.  He will be remembered for his energy, friendliness, enthusiasm and love of life.  Also his determination to stay engaged in the world in which he lived; Richard never stopped learning new things and challenging himself.
